In the Clink: Robson Green & Jason Watkins Get The Game Faces On

Crafting an atmosphere of tension & menace behind bars for Robson Green & Jason Watkin’s The Game Season 2.

Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to head over to San Sebastian in Spain to work with the Channel 5/ Paramount team to create key art for season 2 of gripping crime thriller The Game.

With Jason Watkin’s Huw having put the dastardly Patrick (Robson Green) behind bars in Season 1, the return – currently airing – sees Patrick wage a campaign of psychologically manipulatively revenge from the clink.

The Slammer

So, our artwork to Lead Creative Radek Charun’s brief, had to reflect the claustrophobic, menacing atmosphere of the show, where the Patrick & Huw come face-to-face in a harshly-lit prison interview room.

Appropriately, we set up in a small garage close to the filming location, just about managing to source flash lighting in a bit of Spain where flash heads seem rarer than Vegetarian options on a menu. And I designed a lighting set up to capture the stark downlight & shadowy crosslight of the interview room, while making sure we kept those famous faces visible in the shadows.

Robson and Jason proved to be two of the nicest people you could imagine, so over a staggered day of shooting working alogside art directors Caz Dyer & Radek we captured both versions of the key art concept with the actors working together, as well as singles for socials & a more standard gallery set up.

Then it was over to the Channel 5 team to handle post production and render the prison cell backdrops, while we headed off into the San Sebastian night to enjoy some pinxos &cold beer….
