A Pub Without a Pint for Our Public House

I worked with Dash Arts on location to create the campaign for Barney Norris’ latest state-of-the-nation piece Our Public House. Lager, lager everywhere, but not a drop to drink..

Currently touring, the show deals with democracy, community & engagement, mixing performances from a pro cast with local community ensembles.

Consequently, art director Rebecca Pitt aimed to thrust us into a twilight pub scene, as a diverse cast of characters vigorously chew the cud.

Making Monday Morning Friday Night

So, on a bright, warm summer’s morning, we took over the entirely empty Elderfield pub in North London & set about bringing night-time community vibes to bear.

I love lighting a location like this- even if it felt like we had to used miles of blackcloth to keep the sun out. But that done, with careful mixing of available & flash light & warm gels to create a sense of intimacy, not to mention plenty of haze, we finessed the scene.

Check out BTS images as we built from arrival to final image through the process.

Going Public House

Rebecca’s beautiful treatment of the final edit, with integrated titles, really feels like it takes you inside the group & discussion. Job done! Sadly, it still wasn’t opening time by the time we’d finished, so no celebratory pint…

(NB. If you look closely, you might even spot a certain photographer front left, sitting in as an impassioned debater).
