Hail Mary! Our Lady of Kibeho wins big in the Spotlight Awards

Campaign shot for Stratford East wins the Advertising prize judged by creatives from McCann, Adidas, DHL & more.

Spotlight Award-winning promotional campaign for the Olivier Award winning adaptation of Katori Hall's play about faith, miracles and the Rwandan genocide, at Theatre Royal, Stratford East.

Our Lady of Kibeho

Some lovely news this week – the campaign I shot for Theatre Royal Stratford East‘s Olivier-nominated production of Our Lady of Kibeho won top prize in the Advertising category at the Spotlight Awards 2020.

Being shortlisted in a very competitive category was great, so to win outright was a delight, especially with the judging panel including:

Kieran Delaney, Creative Director at McCann Health, UK; Lisa Marie Walkington, Director Global Creative Shoot & Production at Adidas AG, Germany; Toru Fujii, Senior Creative Director at ADK Tokyo, Japan and Chris Plummer, Creative Director, Netherlands.

About the Job

The shoot was one of my favourite of 2019, and was a tough ask with the subject being a foreshadowing of the Rwandan genocide

“In 1981 at Kibeho College in Rwanda, a young girl claimed to have seen a vision of the Virgin Mary who warned her of the unimaginable: Rwanda becoming hell on Earth. She was ignored by her friends and scolded by her school but then another student saw the vision, and another, and the impossible appeared to be true”

Our challenge was to create an appealing, ticket-selling image capturing the elements of hope, faith and community that define the play, while also nodding to its eerie themes of possession and religious fundamentalism.

And to design and work with lighting states that made darker skin tones look fantastic.
