Making Spaces

I’ve been based at the Make Space Studios for nearly 8 years. It’s a fairly mundane set of semi-permanent buildings from the 60s that used to house a British Rail training site, and despite now being home to 60+ artists, it has never escaped those aesthetic origins.

But walk down the corridor and peer into each artist’s studio, and you can be amazed by the contrasting worlds of wonder made by each resident in their small white box, as the spaces have evolved to better suit and reflect their work.

Multiply that effect by 60 spaces, and that’s a stunningly varied set of working environments.

I tried to capture some of that diverse creativity and variety by visiting willing artists – from puppet makers to screen printers, sculptors to painter – for 10 minutes apiece, armed with one flash unit and a camera, to explore their working worlds.
