PUP ART: Merv-ellous Zooey Deschanel’s Dog is Big in LA

The artwork I shot for new Prime Video romcom MERV, starring Zooey Deschanel, Charlie Cox & leading cinehound Gus the Dog catches eyes on the streets of LA & helps earn big streaming numbers worldwide.

Back in the heat of a 2024 North Carolina summer, I photographed New Girl & Elf actress Zooey Deschanel, Daredevil star Charlie Cox & leading cine-hound Gus the Dog, for the heartwarming & funny Prime Video holiday romcom MERV.
Currently streaming worldwide, the romcom is directed by my wife Jessica Swale (Summerland, Paddington: The Musical), shot by legendary DOP Julio Macat (Home Alone) & produced by ace duo Matt Baer & Roma Downey.
It deals with a broken-up couple who still share custody of their depressed dog. Does saving MERV revive their love?
You’ll have to watch the film over the winter break to find out. Or you could check out the film’s Does the Dog Die? page.

Gus was a perfect model; detailed, obedient, ‘on’ for every single shot & only needing a sausage on a stick to make him look in the right direction & payment in dog treats. If only the same tactics worked with all Hollywood actors… Mainly though, kudos to dog trainer extraordinaire Mark Forbes (101 Dalmatians) & Gus’ handler Katelyn O’Rourke.

Currently #5 in the UK, and #2 in the US
The Big Dog in LA
While in LA for the release of the film, it was great to see some beautiful, large-sized print versions of the campaign in the wild, including a ‘3d’ OOH board complete with glowing titles, embossed Gus & hanging mistletoe sprig.
